 Leave It On

Delorentos must be one the hardest names to remember in the music industry. They sound Spanish, but they are Irish, and on a verge of success. Already publicly acclaimed in their native country, this Dublin based foursome, is about to impress this old and weary music scene. (And they started by impressing a weary music-critic.) After having released their first LP “Leave it On” in 2006, the band toured Ireland excessively, focusing on trying out their new material. A technique that’s perhaps more likely used by stand up comedians or Ryan Adams, Delorentos perfected their songs on the road. Audience stamping their feet along with the drum beat, slick and smart guitar lines charging up the venues and two impeccably clear voices charging the air with pure brisk emotion.

In April this very year, they were out with the new record “In love with Detail” on Irish independent label Cottage. The album turned out to be both a surprise and relief. It turned out that some songs have acquired a slightly different undertone during the production. Now they seemed more polished, and toned down, losing a bit of that bubbly joy so typical for their live performances. Nonetheless, the songs were still there as sharp as ever. On the last track, for instance, the lads portray a painfully common situation, nobody wants to admit nonchalantly: “And I know it was me who began this idle conversation/ But now I’m stuck with the things to say/ And it’s embarrassing for the both of us.”

Their music brings on a spirit of wrecked suburban kids storming into the posh clubs on a Saturday night. The pace is tight and the electrics playful. It is this seductive possibility they take from the murky metropolitan streets, and they sing it, they twist it until it almost cracks. And then they break it like a promise. And then they hold it like a child.

Despite the temptation of the glamour life, in their lyrics they remain refreshingly clever and honest about their young age. “It’s true/ I’m barely out of school.” Kieran’s and Ro’ sing in Rules, seemingly without any effort they make an intriguing polyphony/ duel.

They possess some kind of genuine energy, raw if you will, which transcends best in their live performances. But Delorentos’ music is also humble enough not to try and offer big re/solutions. In fact, its charm, in part, has to do with the thrill of infinite puzzles, a sense of wonder that is hidden in a moment. Their songs are questions and the questions are raised, in every line, with every guitar riff.

I don’t know if I should be glad/ I don’t know if I’ve understood, they sing in “Any other way”, but I think they’ve understood it just right. And no, we don’t want to correct them.

Tip:
They’re loud, they’re exciting.
And they do not resemble Luka Bloom.

Recommended songs:
Eustace Street, Waiting, The Rules.

Unnecessary song:
 Eyes Open
